Terms of use

Last updated 24 October 2026

These terms are the agreement between you and FilmElo (“we”, “us”) for using filmelo.com. By using FilmElo or creating an account, you agree to them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the site.

Our privacy policy explains how we handle your personal data. It isn’t part of these terms, but please read it too.

Who can use FilmElo

You must be 13 or over to create an account. If you are under 18, you need a parent’s or guardian’s permission to use FilmElo.

FilmElo is free, and it is for personal, non-commercial use only.

Your account

  • Give us accurate details, and keep your email address up to date so that account emails reach you.
  • Keep your password secure and don’t share your account. You are responsible for what happens on it. If you think someone else has used it, change your password and tell us through the contact form.
  • One account per person. Extra accounts, for example to vote more than once, aren’t allowed.
  • Choose a username that isn’t offensive or misleading, and isn’t someone else’s name or trade mark. We may change or remove a username that is.

Using FilmElo fairly

When you use FilmElo, you must not:

  • vote or mark films using bots, scripts or any other automated means;
  • try to manipulate the rankings, for example by voting from several accounts or co-ordinating votes with other people;
  • scrape, crawl or copy FilmElo’s rankings, ratings or other data in bulk, or use them to build another service, unless we have agreed to it in writing;
  • interfere with the site or its security, for example by overloading it, probing it for weaknesses, getting around its limits, or accessing anything you aren’t meant to;
  • use FilmElo for anything unlawful, or to harass, impersonate or harm anyone;
  • help or encourage anyone else to do any of these things.

Search engines indexing the site in the ordinary way are welcome.

If we reasonably believe you have broken these rules, we may remove or discount your votes, limit what your account can do, or suspend or delete it, without notice.

Your votes

Your votes are your own opinions. By voting, you give FilmElo a free, permanent, worldwide licence to store, use, combine, analyse and publish your votes, and anything worked out from them, in any form. You can’t withdraw this licence, and it continues after you delete your account. The privacy policy explains what happens to your votes then.

We may remove, discount or reset any votes, including yours, at any time: for example, to deal with suspected manipulation, or when we change how the rankings are worked out.

The rankings

FilmElo’s rankings, ratings and comparisons reflect the choices of the people who vote. They are opinions, not facts, and they aren’t a professional or authoritative judgement of any film or anyone who made it.

They change all the time. Some of the writing about films on FilmElo is produced automatically from the voting data, and it can get things wrong. We don’t promise that the rankings, or anything else on the site, are accurate, complete or up to date.

Film information and images come from TMDB. FilmElo uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB. Film titles, posters and other images belong to their owners.

FilmElo’s content

The site’s design, code, text, rankings, ratings and database belong to FilmElo or to the people who license them to us, and are protected by copyright and database rights.

You’re welcome to share links to FilmElo, and to quote or screenshot small parts of the rankings for non-commercial purposes, as long as you credit FilmElo. Anything more needs our permission in writing.

The beta, and changes to FilmElo

FilmElo is in beta. We may change, add or remove features, reset data such as rankings or vote histories, or suspend or close the site, at any time and without notice.

We don’t promise that FilmElo will always be available, uninterrupted, secure or free of errors, or that anything saved on it will be kept.

Ending your use of FilmElo

You can stop using FilmElo at any time, and delete your account from your profile.

We may suspend or delete your account, or stop you using FilmElo, at any time if you break these terms, if we need to in order to protect the site or other people, or if we close the site. We may also close accounts for other reasons; when we do, we will try to give you reasonable notice.

The parts of these terms that are meant to last, such as the licence over your votes and the limits on our responsibility, still apply after your account ends.

Our responsibility to you

FilmElo is provided free, “as is” and “as available”. As far as the law allows, we make no promises about it beyond those in these terms, and we exclude every warranty or condition that would otherwise be implied, for example about its quality, accuracy or fitness for a purpose.

As far as the law allows, we are not responsible for:

  • any loss or damage that wasn’t a foreseeable result of our breaking these terms or failing to use reasonable care;
  • any business loss, such as lost profit, revenue, opportunity or goodwill, because FilmElo is for personal use only;
  • the loss of any data, votes or rankings;
  • the site being unavailable, interrupted or slow;
  • decisions you make because of the rankings or anything else on the site;
  • other websites we link to, or content that comes from others, such as TMDB;
  • anything caused by events outside our reasonable control.

If we are found responsible to you anyway, our total liability to you for all claims about FilmElo is limited to £50.

If you break these terms and someone makes a claim against us because of it, you agree to cover our reasonable losses and costs from that claim, as far as the law allows.

Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that the law doesn’t allow us to limit or exclude. Nor do they affect your legal rights as a consumer.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. The date at the top shows when they last changed. If a change is significant, we may also tell account holders by email. If you keep using FilmElo after a change, you accept the updated terms. If you don’t accept them, please stop using FilmElo and delete your account.

General

  • These terms are the whole agreement between you and us about using FilmElo.
  • If a court decides that part of these terms can’t be enforced, the rest still applies.
  • If we don’t enforce a term straight away, we can still enforce it later.
  • We may transfer our rights and obligations under these terms to someone else, for example if FilmElo is sold. This won’t reduce your rights under them. You may not transfer yours.
  • Nobody other than you and us has any rights under these terms.
  • These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and any dispute will be dealt with by the courts of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring proceedings in your local courts. If you live elsewhere, you keep any protections your local law gives you that can’t be overridden by agreement.
